3 Of Spades
Players
In a typical game, there are four/two players and two team.
You are on the same team as the person across from you, and the same goes for the other two.
The Goal of 3 Of Spades
The objective is to accurately bid and win points through
tricks, reaching a team score based on your bids.
Bidding
Bidding is simply guessing how many "Points" you can take.
Before each round of Spades begins, each player will bid (or guess) how many points they will take.
The teams then add together the total number of bids. This
is the number of Points that team has to win in order to get a positive score.
You may bid on any number from 150 to 250. But be smart and
remember that it's very difficult to get all or even half of the points. A bid of zero or "nil" is
another strategy we'll talk about shortly.
Here's an example: Player 1, who bids 155. Player 2 then
bids 160. Player 3 bids 165. And finally, Player 4 bids 170. Player 1 and 3 goal is to win at least 165
points based on their bids, Player 2 and 4 will attempt to win at least 170 points.
Playing Spades
After all of the bidding is done, the player who won the
bidding plays any card (Note: In actual game, EXCEPT for a spade. It can be any heart, diamond or club,
but no spades.)
Then, again in a clockwise direction, each player lays down
a card (trick) face up. The card must be of the same suit as the person who started. If you do not have
the same suit, you can play any card of any suit!
If someone plays a Trump card(for ex., Spades), that trumps
all other cards EXCEPT for higher Trump. So even if someone plays the Ace of diamonds, and I play the
trump card (for ex., Spades), 2 of spades, I win that trick if no other spades are played. If no trumps
are played, the highest card wins of the suit that was played first. The winner of each trick leads on
the next.
Scoring
Cards 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9: 0 points.
Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10: 10 points each.
5: 5 points.
3 of Spades: 30 points.
Terminology
Trick: When all four cards are layed out, the trick is what you
call the winner of that particular throw down.
Bid: This is the number of tricks/points that you think you will get
in any given hand. You combine the number you think you will get with the number your teammate estimates
Trump: Having a better card to lay down than the others that have
been played. Spades trump all in this game of course!
